If you’ve been through a divorce or are divorcing in Massachusetts, you could have been influenced by family members, friends, therapists or other authorities. The man in this story is now suggesting that celebrities may be a major influence on people divorcing, and he’s trying to stop them from doing so.
According to this story from May 20, the man and grandfather has founded The Society for the Prevention of Celebrity Divorce with the hopes of stopping fickle celebrity divorces. He reportedly believes that marriages are commitments, not sponsorship opportunities; that opinion might hit hard in Hollywood.
According to the article, the man went into action due to the sadness he felt when his daughter got a divorce. He allegedly believes that celebrities were influential in that divorce. He believes that the society he has founded should help those in the spotlight work through their marriages instead of ending up in divorce courts. He has suggested that when celebrities get married, it’s sometimes not as serious as regular couples.
He thinks celebrities mean “I do…for now,” rather than taking the marriage as a serious commitment. That may or may not be the case, but he’s taken it seriously enough to start his own society and to put up billboards hoping to make celebrities think again about divorcing. With that thought in mind, he also suggests that every time a celebrity pair divorces, that makes it easier for those following the stars to feel a divorce is okay for them as well.
There is no major evidence to back up this opinion, but he does have some interesting facts that he claims are true. He reported that since Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got a divorce in 2012, none of Tom Cruise’s films has topped $100 million at the box office. That might be a coincidence, but he seems to believe that the pair’s divorce may have something to do with those figures.
