It is often difficult for some people to relate to the lifestyles of the rich and famous. While they earn a large pay check, they also work long hours and often live with their life on display for the whole world to see. One star, John Cryer, is going through what many people in Massachusetts and across the county can relate to — his wife is seeking a child support modification. However, some people are surprised by the increase she is requesting.
Cryer and his ex-wife, Sarah Trigger, have a 13-year-old son together. Originally, his former wife only had custody of the teenager for approximately 4 percent of the time. Recently she has been granted 50 percent custody. With the increase in the amount of custody, Trigger is also asking for an increase in the amount of child support Cryer pays.
Trigger, who currently receives $8,000 a month, has requested an increase of over $80,000 per month. She says that their son lives a wealthy lifestyle when he’s with his father, who she believes makes approximately $2 million a month, but has to live a much more austere lifestyle when staying with her. She wants her son to be able to maintain the kind of lifestyle his classmates have at his prestigious private school when he is living with her including access to large birthday parties and overseas vacations. Neither parent has publicly commented on the legal proceedings.
While this case involves a large sum of money, it is not uncommon for a request for child support modification to be filed. Massachusetts parents might file for a modification as a result of an inability to pay resulting from a job loss or medical condition, for example. A judge will often take a person’s change in circumstances into consideration when considering such a request. Filing a request of modification is better in the long run as opposed to being held in contempt of court for failure to pay.
