There are few people who have gone through a divorce and said it was a blissful process. Many times, it is a contentious battle filled with strong emotions. For those without children who seek divorce, a relatively clean break can be made; however, those with children are forever attached to one another through their children even after the final divorce decree has been announced. When issues of child support are on the table, proceedings can become and remain bitter. Parents in Massachusetts can learn this lesson by following the story of Jermaine Jackson, a famous member of the Jackson 5.
According to court documents, Jackson is expected to pay $3,000 each month to support his two sons with his ex-wife. However, over the course of the last year, he has only made payments that totaled just over $5,000. He allegedly owes over $30,000 in late payments.
Jackson will face the court in August over the missing payments which could result in time in jail. Unfortunately for Jackson and his family, this is not the first time he has failed to make payments to his ex-wife. In 2011, his wife took him to court claiming he owed $90,000. She later settled for $80,000.
Hopefully, this is a predicament Massachusetts parents can avoid. Primary care givers depend on child support payments to survive and provide adequately for the children in their care. However, the person paying child support must also be able to support him or herself as well. It’s important that a balance can be found that suits the needs of both parties. It is always better to address concerns regarding child support guidelines with the court proactively.
