Preparing to Divorce an Abusive Partner during the Holiday Season

With Thanksgiving drawing near, while the holiday season is generally filled with happiness and joy, for those going through a divorce, especially with an abusive partner, the holidays can sometimes add fuel to the fire.

Below are a few tips to keep in mind in preparing to divorce an abusive partner during the holidays:

1. During the holiday season, try to remain polite and cordial especially when discussing plans with children. Attempt to limit discussions that have caused arguments in the past and keep conversations simple, yet effective. Remember to communicate about as few topics or issues at a time and avoid lengthy discussions that could lead do disagreement.

2. Consider your children. The holiday season is without doubt one of the busiest times of the year. Children of all ages are involved in activities, sports, programs and social events, all at their peak during the holiday vacations. Remember to keep your children's best interests first and communicate your children's schedule and delegate routine parental responsibilities.

3. Consider yourself. Remember that the holidays are about spending time with family, friends and those who support you. Be sure to carve out time for yourself, to rest, relax and enjoy the season. During a separation, particularly with an abusive partner, it can be difficult to catch a breath. Remember to make time for your own personal needs and health.

4. Seek help from your friends, support group, therapist, or other professional. Although it may not be immediate, it is important to talk to someone about what you are going through.

5. If you are just beginning or considering a divorce, be sure to contact an experienced Attorney for a consultation to fully understand your options.
